Valverde = 2 anos sem competir em Itália

ROME (AP) — The Italian Olympic Committee's anti-doping tribunal has banned Spanish cyclist Alejandro Valverde from competing in Italy for two years.

The tribunal held a hearing Monday into drug allegations against the rider.

The panel's ruling does not apply outside Italy.

In February, the Italian Olympic Committee confronted Valverde with DNA evidence and documents that allegedly showed he was involved in the Operation Puerto blood doping case.

Valverde has filed a complaint in court in Spain, claiming the case should be heard by the Spanish cycling federation. He did not attend the hearing.

ROME (AP) — The Italian Olympic Committee's anti-doping tribunal opened a hearing Monday into drug allegations against Spanish cyclist Alejandro Valverde.

The Italian Olympic Committee, or CONI, is considering a possible two-year ban against the Spanish rider for alleged involvement in the Operation Puerto blood doping scandal.

Valverde did not attend the hearing Monday in Rome. Representatives of the World Anti-Doping Agency and the International Cycling Union were present.

Valverde has filed a complaint in court in Spain, claiming the case should be heard by the Spanish cycling federation.

He contends Italian anti-doping prosecutor Ettore Torri is overstepping his authority by refusing to obey a Spanish judge who said evidence obtained in Spain cannot be used against Valverde in Italy.

In February, CONI confronted Valverde with DNA evidence and documents that allegedly showed he was involved in the Puerto case. More than 50 cyclists originally were linked to the Puerto doping ring, which centered on a clinic in Madrid.
