ITU Statement: Swim Not Cancelled (June 20, 2009 ) | |||
Sunday 21 June, Washington D.C. will host the third leg of the Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship Series, complete with a swim, bike and run. Recently statements have been published by a number of parties that the swim portion of the event may be cancelled due to water quality issues. The International Triathlon Union, USA Triathlon and local organisers want to ensure this is not the case. Today the ITU received the following letter from the Deputy Director of the Department of the Environment of the District of Columbia: “The most recent water quality test conducted on June 15 by the Department of the Environment showed that the Potomac River levels were well within the acceptable range for swimming in the river. However, since the last test, the amount of rainfall may have resulted in an elevated risk. The Department of the Environment states that athletes swim at their own risk and if they choose to take part in the river swim, that they take extra precautions upon exiting the water to ensure that all potential bacterial contaminants are thoroughly rinsed away”. Based on these water quality tests conducted over the past month leading up to the competition, the levels are within the acceptable ITU and USA Triathlon standards. A meeting of coaches and athletes was held to relay this information and to address any concerns. ITU Athlete’s Representative Jessica Harrison of France responded with the following statement: “The athletes very much appreciate that the ITU and race organisers have taken the athlete’s health as a primary concern. We have taken into account that the risk is minimal and the athletes want to go ahead with the swim.” Skip Gilbert, CEO of USA Triathlon added: “Based on the hard data from the test results earlier this week we are well within acceptable standards. The ITU Competition Jury in association with USAT medical and technical officials have made the decision to run a full triathlon tomorrow. “We are excited about the latest leg of the Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship Series race being held in our nation’s capital and we are confident the event will be a real showcase for the sport.” |
