Mark Cavendish won the sixth stage of the Tour de Suisse Thursday in Bad Zurzach over Oscar Freire (Rabobank). Columbia-Highroad teammate George Hincapie led him up to the final 175 metres.

Slovenian Tadej Valjavec (AG2R La Mondiale) kept the race lead he took on Tuesday's stage to Stäfa. He leads over Swiss riders Fabian Cancellara (Saxo Bank), nine seconds, and Oliver Zaugg (Liquigas), 14 seconds, with three days remaining. The race ends with a 39-kilometre time trial in Bern.

Reto Hollenstein (Vorarlberg-Corratec) rode solo in the early moments of the stage. He had 7:30 minutes at 70 kilometres from the start in Oberriet.

Hollenstein kept 2:13 over the group 30 kilometres remaining. Columbia and Cervélo were intent on a sprint finish and worked to pull him back. They caught Hollenstein with 12 kilometres later.

Teams Milram and Liquigas led the group in the final 10 kilometres to Bad Zurzach. Silence-Lotto, Quick Step, Cervélo and Columbia were at the front for the final three kilometres. Hincapie came to the front in the final 400 metres with rival Thor Hushovd (Cervélo TestTeam) on his wheel.
