Abu Dhabi Triathlon unveiled
Wed Nov 04 2009
A big stage was set up at the Shangri La Hotel in Abu Dhabi with Faisal Al Sheik, Head - Major Events Division of ADTA (Aui Dhabi Tourism Authority), 2005 Ironman World Champion Faris Al-Sultan and John Hazan, race director of the inaugural Abu Dhabi Triathlon on the podium to introduce this new event.
The main race will be a 3km swim, 200km bike and 20km run, while the shorter version will feature a 1.5km swim, 100km bike and 10km run. Both events will be clearly favoring cyclists with the unusually long bike segments on schedule. Faris Al-Sultan also emphasized that the shorter run of the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon will allow the participating athletes to recover faster for whatever event might be next on their calendar.
The race course that leads athletes past the Emirates Palace, the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque and various other iconic places will be completely closed off to traffic and thus setting the stage for a very safe event. "The race will be quite flat and fast, but it'll be windy and hot," said Al-Sultan during the press conference.
Another unique feature of the race announced today was a $20,000 prize purse for age groupers, something that is not very common in the sport of triathlon. "The age groupers are the heart and soul of the sport and our goal is to have a first class event for pros and age groupers alike." added Al-Sultan.
