Zeiger, Cunningham win Longhorn
Sun Oct 25 2009
Joanna Zeiger made a smashing comeback from a season-interrupting bout with a hard-to-diagnose-and-treat dizziness, winning Longhorn Ironman 70.3 Austin by 2:14 over Heather Jackson in an impressive time of 4:14:53. The win offers hope that Zeiger, now 38, can defend her Ironman 70.3 World Championship title in three weeks at Clearwater.
Zeiger said the condition first struck her a few weeks after her win at Clearwater last November and forced DNFs at Ironman Arizona, Ironman 70.3 New Orleans, and culminated at the Boulder 5430 long course where she was struck by extreme dizziness on the run and literally fell down and could not continue. Zeiger, who battled near-career-ending back and leg problems for four years before recovering, then entered into an intense series of medical sleuthing to seek a cure.
Richie Cunningham of Australia successfully defended his 2008 Austin win with a 3:48:55 finish which gave him a 1:48 margin of victory over runner-up Brian Fleischmann of the US. Cunningham emerged from the swim a close fourth in 22:57, posted a fifth-best 2:10:22 bike, and cashed in the win with a second-best 1:12:11 run.
